cold december.

Do you realise that people always bounce back from tragedies, fresh, innervated and usually an all-round better person? of course there's the disclaimer that they must have taken the tragedy as a milestone in life to learn from, not something to gripe about. i read with growing respect about matt costa and jack johnson. 2 singersongwriters that are probably in my favourite genre (if you can call acousticsoftrock a genre) of music.
Both started out in sports, both almost turning pro. jack johnson was the youngest of his age to get into a surfing trial, while matt costa was on the verge of turning pro, when both of them suffered serious injuries - matt shattering his leg, and both had to spend a long period of time recuperating. but it was also during this time of recuperation that they directed their energy and time towards writing songs instead of sitting around and asking, 'why me'. I'm not sure how to respond if something that i thought was going to be my life just disappear in front of me. i'm not sure if i would take it in my stride and shift my energies to something else. but another thing that they both have in common, is that they both had 'lucky' breaks. jack's demo caught the ears of a music industry bigwig who broke him in, and later so did matt's demo. and jack johnson also later gave matt the opportunity to work with him. and they understand the importance of giving others in the field opportunities.
i think i sound too preachy and girly-impressed to sound sane. but well, YES, it's that time of the month. i'm entitled to be emotional and sappy. i teared at matt costa's song lyrics, 'cold december' (and a number of others) just now. you know what else i love about matt costa? his official site has ALL his songs available for people to listen to as well as accompanying lyrics. too good to be true. i leave you with cold december.
